Why tidal?            '5% of UK electricity' - Carbon Trust 2006

Climate change is increasingly being recognised as the major concern of our time. The burning of fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas for the production of energy is releasing huge quantities of carbon dioxide. This gas accounts for 80% of the world greenhouse gas emissions.

The UK government is committed to targets of 10% reduction of carbon emissions by 2010 and 20% by 2020. The energy industry is poised to fulfil this demand, and policies are in place to ensure that the market drives the development of low carbon technology. The increasing UK dependence on imported fuels, from natural gas to uranium, raises security of supply issues. Tidal stream has the potential to create a more self sufficient energy industry, with reliable power to supply the thirsty UK economy.

Tidal stream energy will be an essential part of the energy mix. With the imminent decommissioning of many large UK power stations a new energy source must be found. Tidal stream will provide a predictable and reliable source of electricity whilst being economically attractive and having a very small environmental footprint. The environmental impact of these devices is currently under investigation by many stakeholders. More>>
