SITE DEVELOPMENT

Earlier this year, Swanturbines successfully bid for a Crown Estate Lease on behalf of a client, for the river bed from Montrose Bridge to the sea, securing a tenancy lease for a 25 year operational period.

An extensive Environmental Impact Assessment has also been undertaken in support of a Licence Application to Marine Scotland and this will be presented in an Environmental Statement produced by Swanturbines to be published in early 2012. This includes an assessment of the expected effect on marine navigation aspects at the site.

The Swan team is continuing to evaluate sites around the UK for deployment of various sizes of turbine. The company has recently won both private and public sector contracts to undertake site assessment and development in England, Scotland and Wales.

INSHORE TIDAL TURBINE (Cygnus ISTT)

Development is underway on a turbine designed specifically to exploit the inshore and shallow water areas of tidal flow. This project has been progressing with a series of tests and investigations, some of which have been supported by the SMART: Scotland Feasibility programme. Aspects of the turbine system including the blade and support structure have been manufactured and tested under a series of operational conditions. The test results were as expected, validating the ongoing design work. Further testing is proposed in 2012.

PROJECT CYGNET

A 300kW demonstration device is under construction to be installed at the European Marine Energy Centre in Orkney. The 'Cygnet' device is currently located  in South Wales. The major components have been acquired and the generator build has successfully completed. The installation test with Jumbo Offshore demonstrated the ability of the installation vessel to undertake the deployment in the Falls of Warness.

This £7m project will demonstrate the robust design and installation philosophy of the Swanturbines technology. The project is funded through private sources and Swanturbines is continuing to raise funds.
